Child’s Severe Leg Pain Reveals Rare Flu Complication

A Michigan family shared their story after 9-year-old Tori’s routine flu turned into a serious and rare flu complication that left her unable to stand. Her mother, Ashley Geuther, hopes that speaking out will help other parents recognize the early warning signs. The experience has struck a chord online, reminding families that the flu, though common, can occasionally take an unexpected and alarming turn.

When Typical Flu Symptoms Take an Unexpected Turn

At first, Tori’s illness looked like any other seasonal flu. She had a fever, chills, and extreme tiredness. Ashley monitored her closely, and once the fever broke, she assumed her daughter was on the road to recovery.
However, things changed quickly. Soon after the fever subsided, Tori began complaining of deep, sharp pain in her thighs. Before long, the pain shifted down to her calves, something far more intense than the usual muscle aches seen during flu recovery.

The Moment the Pain Became Impossible to Ignore

Initially, Ashley believed the discomfort was part of the healing process. Many parents would think the same. But instead of improving, the pain grew stronger.
Tori told her mother that her legs felt “too weak to hold her up,” and walking became extremely painful. Recognizing this wasn’t normal, Ashley sought help at a walk-in clinic.
Yet the clinicians were not concerned. They advised rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relief and even cleared Tori to return to school.
When Tori attempted to stand, she collapsed after a single step. That was the turning point. Ashley carried her daughter to the car and rushed straight to the emergency room.

A Rare Diagnosis Often Missed by Clinicians

Hospital testing blood work and a urinalysis finally revealed the true cause: benign acute childhood myositis (BACM), a rare flu complication that can appear in children after viral infections such as influenza.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), BACM leads to sudden inflammation of the leg muscles, especially the calves, causing intense pain and temporary difficulty walking. Because many healthcare providers see this condition infrequently, diagnosis can be delayed.

For Ashley, the diagnosis was startling. She had never heard of flu-related myositis, and watching her daughter struggle just to stand made the experience frightening and overwhelming.

Treatment, Recovery, and a Family’s Relief

Tori was admitted for IV fluids, pain management, and close monitoring. Although she improved steadily, her recovery was not immediate. Even after she went home, it took about a week before she could walk normally again. Gradually, the sharp pain eased, and her strength returned.
Today, she is back to her energetic, active self.
Still, the memory of that stressful week remains vivid for the family. Ashley later shared their story on TikTok, where the video has reached more than 777,000 views and thousands of supportive comments.

Conclusion

Ashley’s biggest message to other parents is simple but powerful: trust your instincts. If a child says something feels wrong, especially pain that is intense, sudden, or unusual, it deserves attention.
She hopes their experience will help others recognize the signs of viral myositis early and understand that, although uncommon, this rare flu complication can appear without warning.
