19-Year-Old Commits Suicide After Assault by Classmates
A 19-year-old second-year engineering student from a private college in Ghatkesar, Hyderabad, died by suicide on Sunday evening. The young man, who belonged to a Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, ended his life in his hostel room after an alleged incident of physical assault and financial harassment by his peers.
Events Leading Up to the Suicide
According to police officials, the student and his peers had gathered at a local bar between 4 pm and 8 pm on Sunday. During the gathering, a dispute reportedly broke out regarding a bill of nearly ₹10,000. The victim alleged in a selfie video recorded before his death that he was beaten by his friends and pressured to cover part of the amount. With no other option, he had to call his father, a farmer from Adilabad, and request ₹1,500 to settle the bar payment.
The video evidence retrieved from his phone clearly outlined his distress and the humiliation he faced. After returning to his hostel, the student took the extreme step, leaving his hostel mates shocked when they discovered him unresponsive in his locked room.
Police Investigation Underway
Following a complaint from the student’s father, authorities have booked nine individuals for abetment of suicide, extortion, and violations under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Among the accused are juniors, classmates, and possibly some outsiders who were present during the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police PV Padmaja Reddy confirmed that investigators are currently identifying all those involved and determining the level of responsibility each person carried in pushing the student toward suicide. One of the names mentioned in the video was “Chinna,” but further verification is still ongoing.
The Mental Health Impact of Peer Pressure and Ragging
This case highlights the devastating mental health toll of ragging, bullying, and peer pressure among students. Young individuals often face overwhelming stress when exposed to humiliation, financial coercion, or physical assault. In many cases, such experiences can lead to feelings of hopelessness and isolation, increasing the risk of suicidal behaviour.
Experts stress that institutions must strengthen anti-ragging measures, promote mental health awareness, and create safe avenues for students to report abuse without fear of retaliation. Timely counselling, peer support systems, and strict disciplinary action against perpetrators are vital to preventing further cases of student suicide after ragging.
Conclusion
The untimely death of this young student is a sobering reminder of the urgent need for stronger mental health support and safer college environments. While investigations continue, the incident underscores how unchecked ragging and harassment can spiral into tragedies that not only end young lives but also devastate families and communities.
