

Delhi launches monsoon mosquito killer train drive
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Northern Railway initiate an insecticide spraying drive to combat the mosquitoes causing illnesses like dengue, malaria and chikungunya by train.
The Mosquito Menace in Monsoon
Come monsoon, and there is a spate of illnesses caused by mosquito bites. The stagnant water with unclean conditions is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The train tracks are one such place where water stagnates and mosquitoes breed.
Launch of the Mosquito Terminator Train
In a commendable move, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Northern Railway have initiated an insecticide spraying drive by a special train, which is called the Mosquito Terminator Train.
Features of the Special Train
This train is fitted with a special truck, atop a railway wagon, containing a power sprayer filled with anti-larval chemicals, that will be sprayed along the railway tracks. The radius covered will be 50-60 metres along both sides of the railway track, and also the far-reaching areas of the tracks that are impossible to navigate in person.
Official Flag-Off
The train was flagged off by Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh in Delhi in the presence of Pankaj Naresh Agrawal, Additional Commissioner, Ashok Rawat, Public Health Officer and representatives of the MCD and Northern Railway.
Part of a Larger Cleanliness Drive
Ashwini Kumar, Commissioner of MCD, said that this joint initiative was a part of the cleanliness and mosquito eradication drive undertaken by the MCD. This initiative is expected to continue till September. He urged the general public to make efforts to keep their surroundings clean and prevent stagnation of water.
Expected Impact
The illnesses caused by mosquitoes are hoped to be drastically reduced by this drive. He also said that this year has seen fewer dengue cases in Delhi, as compared to last year.

Truly a commendable effort. This shows that if the Government departments work in tandem, it may be beneficial to the citizens of this country. The need of the hour is support and foresight to make the country healthier and safer to live in.
