You’ll learn the types of abuse, warning signs, statistics, and how to prevent this growing issue.
Every Elder Deserves Respect, Not Silence
Did you know? Nearly 1 in 6 older adults worldwide experience abuse each year, yet most cases go unreported. That’s why World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is observed every June 15 to shine a global spotlight on a crisis we can no longer ignore.
This international United Nations-designated day encourages people worldwide to speak up for the rights and dignity of older adults. In India, where over 149 million people are aged 60 and above, raising awareness is more important than ever.
What Is Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse refers to any act that harms an older person, especially by someone they know or trust, like a
- Family member
- Caregiver
- Even a health worker
It can happen at
- Home
- Assisted living facilities
- Hospitals
The main types include:
- Physical abuse – hitting, restraining, or causing bodily harm
- Emotional or psychological abuse – intimidation, isolation, threats, or humiliation

- Abandonment – deserting an elderly person without care
Why This Day is Important for India
India is undergoing a demographic shift: by 2050, one in five Indians will be over 60 years old. Yet, reports of elder abuse, especially emotional and financial, are rising.
In 2023, a survey by HelpAge India found that 47% of elders experienced abuse, mostly by their children or relatives. What’s worse? More than 70% never reported it, fearing shame, retaliation, or lack of support.
“Elder abuse is not just a personal issue. It’s a social justice issue,” says HelpAge India CEO, Rohit Prasad.
Red Flags: How to Spot Elder Abuse
You may be the only person in someone’s life who notices the signs. Be alert to:
- Unexplained injuries or frequent falls
- Withdrawal or sudden fearfulness
- Changes in financial status or missing assets
- Poor hygiene or untreated medical issues
- Unusual bruises, burns, or restraints
If you suspect abuse, do not ignore it. Talk to the elder, offer support, and contact authorities or helplines.
