Doctor Assaulted in Deoghar Sparks District-Wide Strike

Summary: A pediatrician in Deoghar was brutally assaulted by a mob after a baby’s death, despite the doctor advising urgent hospital care. The incident sparked outrage among medical professionals, leading to a massive doctors’ strike across the district, affecting over 6,000 patients.

Brutal Attack on Doctor in Deoghar Triggers Doctors’ Strike

What would you do if your doctor were attacked for doing their job?

In Deoghar, Jharkhand, a pediatrician was reportedly brutally assaulted by more than a dozen people after the tragic death of a one-month-old baby. The infant’s family had allegedly ignored the doctor’s advice to admit the child for better treatment, and when the baby sadly passed away, they chose violence.

This shocking incident highlights the growing concern about violence against healthcare professionals, a problem that’s not only unfair but also deeply dangerous for the healthcare system and patient care.

Pediatrician Attacked Despite Proper Medical Advice

The doctor, who runs Arogn Shishu Kendra and is also posted at Radar Hospital, was attacked right at his residence. Over a dozen assailants reportedly scaled his boundary wall, stormed into his home, and beat him with iron rods. He suffered head injuries and a fractured hand.

Not stopping there, the mob also vandalised his clinic and home. This terrifying act of violence was allegedly carried out by the infant’s relatives, frustrated over the baby’s passing.

FIR Filed, Police Action Delayed

The doctor lodged a complaint with the local police, and an FIR was registered under relevant sections. However, there was no immediate arrest, which led to widespread condemnation by medical associations.

Dr D. Tituri, President of the Indian Medical Association (Deoghar chapter), told the Mesdia,

“Three days have passed since the incident. Though we gave police two days to arrest the accused, this shows the casual approach of police towards ensuring safety of medical practitioners.”

Doctors Go on Strike, 6,000+ Patients Affected

In protest, over 250 doctors across the district launched a complete OPD shutdown starting Wednesday morning. Both government and private healthcare services halted outpatient departments, though emergency services remained functional.

This strike resulted in over 6,000 patients not receiving medical care across the district, a grim consequence of systemic failure to protect frontline healthcare workers.

Arrests Made, Strike Called Off

The two-day strike finally came to an end on Thursday evening, after police arrested the individuals who allegedly attacked the doctor. While this brought some relief, the incident leaves behind a pressing question:

How can we ensure the safety of those who dedicate their lives to saving ours?

Conclusion: A Call for Accountability and Action

This disturbing incident in Deoghar isn’t just about one doctor, it’s a wake-up call for everyone. Without timely legal action and protection, more doctors may hesitate to work under pressure, and that affects all of us.

Healthcare workers deserve safety, support, and respect…not violence
