Safdarjung Hospital Removes World’s Largest Tumour
Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital have accomplished a major medical breakthrough by successfully removing the world’s largest adrenal tumour through robotic surgery. The tumour, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm, was removed from a 36-year-old woman using minimally invasive methods.
Milestone in Robotic Surgery
Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, confirmed that this is the largest adrenal tumour ever to be excised through robotic, minimally invasive surgery. The complex procedure was performed by a surgical team headed by Dr. Pawan Vasudeva, Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant. He was supported by Dr. Niraj Kumar and Dr. Avishek Mandal, with anaesthesia managed by Dr. Sushil, Dr. Bhavya, and Dr. Megha.
A Complex and Risky Procedure
The surgery was highly challenging due to the size of the tumour and its location. It had grown dangerously close to several vital organs, including the Inferior Vena Cava (a major vein), the liver, and the right kidney. This made the operation extremely risky, requiring careful dissection and expert surgical handling.
Dr. Vasudeva stated that the Da Vinci robotic system was crucial to the surgery’s success. Its advanced 3D vision and highly precise robotic arms allowed the team to perform the procedure with exceptional accuracy, avoiding damage to surrounding organs.
Successful Outcome and Quick Recovery
The surgery lasted over three hours, and the tumour was removed completely without complications. The patient’s recovery was smooth, and she was discharged just three days after surgery.
Advantages of Robotic Surgery
- Smaller incisions (keyhole surgery)
- Less postoperative pain
- Faster recovery and discharge
- Early return to daily activities
Had the tumour been removed using open surgery, it would have required a large 20 cm incision, leading to a longer and more painful recovery period.
Conclusion
Dr. Bansal highlighted that such advanced and life-saving surgery was provided free of cost at Safdarjung Hospital, in line with its mission to offer cutting-edge healthcare to all patients, regardless of their financial background. A similar procedure in the private sector would have cost several lakhs of rupees.
This landmark surgery not only marks a milestone for the hospital but also showcases India’s growing capabilities in robotic and minimally invasive surgery, making high-quality healthcare more accessible.
