Fast, Easy... and Deadly? The Hidden Danger in Foods

Do you often rely on ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat foods? If so, you may want to think twice. A recent global study has found that eating large amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) can greatly increase the risk of early, preventable death.

What Are Ultra-Processed Foods?

UPFs are foods that are highly industrialized. They are usually made with ingredients extracted from foods or even created in laboratories. These products often contain little to no whole, natural foods. Common examples include:

  • Packaged snacks
  • Instant meals
  • Sugary drinks
  • Processed meats

Moreover, UPFs are rich in sodium, unhealthy fats, and sugars, and often contain artificial colours, flavors, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and other additives.

Health Risks Linked to UPFs

Previous research has already connected UPF consumption with over 32 different health problems, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Certain types of cancer
  • Depression

However, this new study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, goes a step further. It highlights the direct connection between UPF intake and an increased risk of death from all causes.

Key Findings From the Study

The researchers analyzed data from eight countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They found that:

  • Each 10% increase in UPF consumption led to a 3% rise in the risk of death from any cause.
  • The share of UPF calories varied greatly — from 15% in Colombia to over 50% in the US.
  • The number of deaths linked to UPFs ranged from 4% in countries with lower consumption to almost 14% in countries with the highest consumption.

Why UPFs Are So Harmful

The study’s lead author, Eduardo A.F. Nilson from the University of São Paulo, explained that the harm comes not only from the high levels of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats but also from the way these foods are processed. Industrial processing alters food structures and adds artificial substances that can damage health in ways not seen with natural foods.

A Worrying Trend Across the World

In high-income countries, UPF consumption has remained very high and steady over the last decade. Unfortunately, in low- and middle-income countries, UPF intake is steadily rising. This means that although wealthier nations are currently experiencing more UPF-related deaths, the burden is quickly spreading worldwide.

Conclusion

Experts are calling for urgent global action. According to Nilson, governments should introduce regulations and taxes to discourage UPF consumption and instead promote traditional diets based on fresh and minimally processed foods.
In short, this study adds strong evidence that cutting down on ultra-processed foods could save millions of lives. Choosing fresh, natural foods whenever possible may be one of the most powerful steps we can take to protect our health.
