Amrita Hospital Breaks New Ground with Successful Hand Transplants

Recently, Amrita Hospital in Faridabad successfully performed a first-hand transplant. The surgeries were performed in December 2023 on two male patients, 64-year-old Gautam Tayal and 19-year-old Devansh Gupta.

Gautam Tayal, who had a kidney transplant a decade earlier, lost his left hand in an industrial accident two years ago.

Dr. Mohit Sharma (Head of Amrita Hospital’s Centre for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) emphasized the complexities of connecting two bones, two arteries, 25 tendons, and 5 nerves.

Devansh Gupta, a 19-year-old who lost his both hands and right lower leg in a train accident three years ago, has had a successful hand transplant. The donated hands were from a 33-year-old guy from Surat with a deadly lung ailment.

Dr. Anil Murarka, Senior Consultant at the hospital, explained the challenges of transplanting at upper arm levels but reported excellent progress. Devansh will require lifelong immunosuppression and extensive physiotherapy for 6 to 18 months to regain hand function

Both patients were grateful for the fresh take on life availed by the innovative operations. Gautam Tayal termed it a “second opportunity,” and Devansh Gupta said getting new hands was a “dream come true.” The result was due to the efforts of a multidisciplinary group at Amrita Hospital.

Swami Nijamritananda Puri, the Administrative Director of the hospital, congratulated the medical team for the remarkable achievement. Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Medical Director, praised the success and emphasized the hospital’s commitment to the patient’s normal lives post-transplantation.

The surgeries mark a significant advancement in medical science and showcase Amrita Hospital’s emergence as a leading institution for hand transplants. The hospital’s founder, Amma, was acknowledged as a divine influence contributing to the surgical success.
