Why are More People Dying in Goa? Find Out Now
The Economic Survey 2024-25, presented in the state assembly, highlights a slowdown in Goa’s population growth along with a rise in health-related deaths. The survey also points to an increase in the infant mortality rate and a significant number of deaths caused by serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.
Slower Population Growth
According to the report, Goa’s projected population for 2025 stands at 15.96 lakh, compared to 15.87 lakh in 2024. This indicates a marginal increase, showing a deceleration in the state’s population growth.
Rising Death Rate and Health Concerns
The death rate in Goa was recorded at 9.40 per thousand people in 2022. However, this figure rose to 9.50 per thousand in 2023. The survey states that 47.44% of total deaths in Goa were due to natural causes, particularly chronic illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
Unnatural Deaths and Accidents
Apart from natural causes, 6.15% of deaths in Goa were attributed to unnatural incidents. These include drowning, venomous animal bites or stings, accidental burns, poisoning, road accidents, and suicides.
Increase in Infant Mortality Rate
A concerning trend observed in the survey is the rise in infant mortality. The state recorded 10.73 infant deaths per thousand live births in 2023, an increase from 8.83 per thousand in 2022. This indicates a decline in child health conditions, requiring urgent attention.
Conclusion
The Economic Survey underscores the need for stronger healthcare interventions in Goa. With rising deaths due to chronic diseases and increasing infant mortality, there is a pressing requirement for better medical facilities, preventive healthcare measures, and awareness programs to improve overall public health in the state.
