Shocking Wedding Fail: Drunk Groom Ends Up in Jail
A wedding in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, took an unexpected turn when a drunk groom mistakenly garlanded the bride’s best friend instead of his bride. The incident, which occurred in Naughwa Bhagwantpur village, led to a series of dramatic events, eventually resulting in the cancellation of the marriage and the groom’s arrest.
Wedding Delay and Groom’s Unusual Behavior
The groom, Ravindra Kumar, 26, arrived late to his wedding. Instead of proceeding with the ceremony, he lingered with his friends, drinking and socializing. Meanwhile, 500 guests patiently waited for the traditional garland-exchanging ceremony to begin.
A Shocking Mistake
As the moment finally arrived, Kumar, visibly intoxicated, mistakenly placed the ceremonial garland around the bride’s best friend instead of his bride, Radha Devi, 21. Before anyone could react, he removed the garland and placed it around a nearby male friend. To everyone’s surprise, he then garlanded an elderly guest as well.
Bride’s Strong Reaction
The guests were momentarily silent, stunned by the unexpected turn of events. However, the bride did not hesitate—she immediately slapped Kumar and walked out of the wedding, making it clear that she would not proceed with the marriage.
Family’s Disappointment and Police Involvement
Radha’s family was distraught. Her brother, Omkar Verma, revealed that they had spent over Rs 10 lakh on the wedding preparations. He suspected that the groom’s actions might have been an intentional act of humiliation due to dissatisfaction with the dowry gifts. Adding to their shock, they later discovered that Kumar was not a farmer, as his family had claimed, but a truck driver.
Legal Action Taken
At 4 AM, the bride’s family filed a complaint at Kularia police station. By morning, the wedding was officially called off, and Kumar was taken into police custody. A medical examination confirmed that he was intoxicated. The police charged him under sections of the Dowry Act.
Despite his family’s plea to continue the wedding, Radha firmly refused, standing by her decision to end the marriage.
Conclusion
Circle Officer Harsh Modi, who handled the case, stated, “The groom was intoxicated, and his medical report confirmed it. His behaviour was inappropriate, leading to legal action.” While used to handling criminal cases like theft and break-ins, he admitted that cases involving wedding mishaps like this were unusual.
This incident serves as a strong reminder of the importance of respect and responsibility in marriage ceremonies. The bride’s decision to walk away highlights the growing empowerment of women in standing against unacceptable behaviour.
