Farewell to the ‘Bihar Kokila’: Sharda Sinha Passes at 72

Sharda Sinha, affectionately known as the ‘Bihar Kokila,’ passed away on November 5 at AIIMS in Delhi. Known for her contributions to Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi folk music, Sinha was widely celebrated for her soulful Chhath songs, which she particularly enjoyed during the Chhath Puja festivities. She was 72 years old and had been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018.

Battle with Multiple Myeloma

Sharda Sinha was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer affecting plasma cells in the bone marrow, six years ago. The disease caused her condition to deteriorate, leading to frequent infections, kidney issues, and bone pain. Her health took a turn for the worse recently, leading to her hospitalization and eventual placement on a ventilator.
Multiple myeloma is characterized by cancerous plasma cells producing abnormal proteins, which can damage organs, especially the kidneys. Symptoms include fatigue, anaemia, bone pain, and frequent infections. Despite advances in treatment, the exact cause remains unknown, though factors like age and family history increase risk.

Cause of Death: Septicemia Complications

Medically, Sharda Sinha’s death was attributed to refractory shock caused by septicemia, or blood poisoning. Septicemia is a severe bacterial infection in the bloodstream that can lead to septic shock, a life-threatening condition with symptoms such as high fever, chills, confusion, and rapid heart rate. It progresses rapidly and can result in multi-organ failure if not managed promptly.

Tributes from Political Leaders and Public Figures

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, noting her immense contribution to Indian folk music. On X (formerly Twitter), he posted, “Her passing is an irreversible loss for the music world. Other leaders like Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah highlighted her role in popularizing Bhojpuri and Maithili songs.
Actor-politicians Manoj Bajpayee and Ravi Kishan also paid tribute to Sinha, with Bajpayee describing her passing as a “loss for the Bhojpuri world and the country.”

State Honours and Final Rites

Sharda Sinha’s son, Anshuman, announced that her funeral would be held in Patna with full state honours. Her mortal remains will be brought to Patna, where fans and well-wishers can pay their final respects.

Personal Losses

Sinha’s passing comes just a month after her husband, Brajkishore Sinha, passed away. In her final Facebook posts, she shared her grief, writing about her “empty forehead without sindoor” and remembering her husband fondly.

Sharda Sinha’s legacy as a Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awardee will continue to inspire future generations of folk musicians and admirers of Indian culture. Her unique voice and timeless songs remain a cherished part of India’s musical heritage.
