Can Nutella and Fried Rice Taste Good?
Food trends on social media often reveal strange and unexpected flavour combinations. While some spark curiosity and gain fans, others leave people puzzled. A recent example is Nutella fried rice an unusual mix of sweet and savoury that’s now making headlines.
The Viral Recipe: A Bold Experiment
Food blogger Calvin Lee, known for trying unique dishes, posted a reel on Instagram where he made fried rice using Nutella as a main ingredient. In the video, he mixes Nutella into cooked white rice, then adds raw eggs, garlic, soy sauce, chilli oil, and vegetables, cooking the mixture together like a traditional stir-fry.
His verdict? Surprisingly positive. Calvin describes the dish as “perfectly balanced”, claiming that the sweet hazelnut spread pairs well with spicy chilli oil when fried.
Mixed Reactions from the Food Community
Not everyone was on board with this combination. While some users said it looked appetizing, others were shocked. Comments ranged from curiosity “It looks good, not gonna lie” to disbelief “I’m gonna wash my eyes” and “An Italian food squad might come after you.”
Some people also raised concerns about food waste, asking whether he finishes the dishes he experiments with. Others took the trend further, suggesting even more bizarre combinations like Vegemite fried rice or banana with cheese.
Study Shows Strong Predictive Power
In the study, over 21,000 adults aged 50–80 who voluntarily underwent LDCT scans between 2009 and 2021 were followed until 2024. Sybil analyzed these scans to estimate each person’s future risk of lung cancer.
The model successfully predicted who would develop lung cancer within one year and six years even among never-smokers. This suggests it can provide valuable risk assessments that go beyond traditional factors like smoking history or age.
Nutrition and Culinary Perspective
From a health and nutrition standpoint, combining high-sugar spreads like Nutella with traditional savoury meals isn’t ideal for regular consumption. Nutella contains added sugars and fats, which may conflict with the nutritional value of typical vegetable fried rice. However, as an occasional indulgence or creative kitchen experiment, it can be part of an adventurous food experience.
This trend also reflects a broader movement in food culture where personal expression and novelty sometimes outweigh traditional flavour rules. While not for everyone, such combinations challenge our taste boundaries and encourage culinary innovation.
Conclusion
Whether you’re excited to try it or want to look away, Nutella fried rice has certainly started a conversation. It may not end up in cookbooks any time soon, but it shows how today’s food culture embraces creativity even if it means blending chocolate spread with garlic and soy sauce.
