Omega-3 May Shield Babies from Cannabis Harm

Summary:New research from Western University suggests Omega-3 supplements may help prevent the harmful effects of prenatal cannabis exposure, including low birth weight and heart issues in newborns. Using rat models, researchers found that Omega-3 could counteract THC’s negative impact on fetal development.

Could Omega-3 Protect Babies from Cannabis Exposure?

New research offers hope for unborn babies exposed to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in the womb. Omega-3 supplements might help prevent low birth weight and heart issues.

If you’re pregnant or planning to be, you’ve probably heard that cannabis use isn’t safe during pregnancy. But what if there’s a way to protect babies who are unintentionally exposed? A groundbreaking study from Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry suggests that Omega-3 fatty acids, a common and accessible supplement, may help reduce the harmful effects of prenatal cannabis exposure.

What Happens When Babies Are Exposed to THC in the Womb?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active component in cannabis, has already been linked to low birth weight and heart complications in newborn animals. A 2019 study showed that THC exposure during pregnancy reduced important heart functions like:

  • Stroke volume (blood pumped per heartbeat)
  • Cardiac output (total blood pumped per minute)
  • Ejection fraction (percentage of blood leaving the heart each beat)

These are critical markers of a baby’s heart health.

The Breakthrough: How Omega-3 Makes a Difference

In this new study, researchers replicated the earlier findings but added something new: they gave pregnant rat models an Omega-3-rich diet during pregnancy and for three weeks postpartum.

The result? A significant reduction in negative outcomes.

“When we gave the animal models an Omega-3 diet… it prevented low birth weight outcomes,” said Dr. Dan Hardy, lead researcher and professor at Schulich.
“More importantly, it prevented the early decrease in cardiac function.”

Why Omega-3? The Science Behind the Supplement

Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are already celebrated for supporting fetal brain and heart development. They’ve also been shown to help prevent gestational diabetes

Dr. Hardy emphasizes that Omega-3s are:

  • Widely available
  • Well-tolerated
  • Safe during pregnancy

This makes them an ideal candidate for a protective nutritional strategy during pregnancy.

A Ray of Hope - But Not a Free Pass for Cannabis Use

“Ultimately, the best way to prevent the adverse cardiac health outcomes in offspring is to stop using cannabis,” said Kendrick Lee, the study’s first author.

Lee also noted that Omega-3 may still help babies who were exposed to cannabis unknowingly, offering a possible safety net when prevention fails.

Final Thoughts: What This Means for Expecting Parents

This research is still in the animal-testing phase, it’s a promising step toward real-world application. If you’re pregnant or considering pregnancy, Omega-3 supplements are already recommended and this adds another reason to include them.
