UP Woman Slits Abdomen in Labour Pain, Baby Born Safe
A shocking incident from Bahraich has drawn national attention after a UP woman slits abdomen due to labour pain, yet later gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
The 35-year-old woman, identified as Nankai, reportedly injured herself with a kitchen knife when her labour pain became unbearable. Neighbours rushed her to a nearby community health centre, where doctors safely delivered her baby through normal delivery.
Although the newborn is stable, the mother’s condition turned critical soon after.
Severe pain led to a desperate act
According to local officials, Nankai lives in Nandwal village under the Baundi police station limits in Uttar Pradesh. Her husband passed away about six months ago, and she has been staying alone since then.
On Thursday afternoon, labour started at home. As the pain increased, she allegedly lost control and used a serrated kitchen knife to cut her abdomen.
Neighbours heard her screams and immediately arranged transport to the Fakharpur Community Health Centre.
Baby delivered safely, mother’s condition worsens
Doctors at the facility managed a normal delivery, and Nankai gave birth to a healthy baby girl. However, soon after childbirth, she began to bleed heavily.
Medical staff found a deep abdominal wound, with parts of her intestines protruding. Due to the seriousness of her injuries and significant blood loss, doctors referred her to a higher medical centre in Lucknow for advanced treatment.
Hospital officials confirmed that she arrived in critical condition around 3.20 pm and required urgent surgical care.
Conclusion
This case highlights the urgent need for better access to maternity services, pain relief options, and emotional support, especially for women in rural areas and those living alone.
Health experts stress that severe labour pain can cause panic and poor judgment. Early hospital admission, skilled birth attendants, and proper counselling can prevent such life-threatening situations.
For now, doctors continue to monitor Nankai closely, while her newborn remains safe.
