Mango in Omelette? This Viral Recipe Has Viewers Shocked

Mango season is here, and the beloved fruit is making its way into many creative recipes. Rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants, mangoes are typically enjoyed fresh, in smoothies, or as part of desserts. However, one street vendor in India has taken innovation to a new level by adding mangoes to omelettes.
A recent viral video shows the vendor preparing what he calls an “Aamlette” a fusion of “aam” (the Hindi word for mango) and omelette. The video, posted on Instagram, has stirred a storm of reactions across social media.

How Is the Mango Omelette Made?

The preparation begins with dicing a ripe mango into small cubes. The vendor then cracks two eggs into a bowl, mixing them with onions, tomatoes, green chillies, coriander, salt, and Indian spices. After heating the butter in a pan, the egg mixture is poured in.

What sets this omelette apart is the addition of mango chunks during the cooking process. Once partially cooked, the omelette is topped with grated boiled egg, coriander, and tomatoes. After flipping, he adds a second layer of toppings tandoori mayonnaise, more boiled egg, and additional spices. The final garnish includes mayonnaise, chilli flakes, and a side of bread with garlic chutney.

Online Reactions

Despite the vendor’s creativity, online reactions have been overwhelmingly negative. Many food lovers expressed disapproval and concern over the dish’s flavour and appeal.

Here’s what some users had to say:

  • “RIP omelette.”
  • “Leave the mangoes alone please.”
  • “Justice for mango.”
  • “Cooking nhi aati…Sharam toh aati hogi [You don’t know how to cook…have some shame].”
  • “Shut your shop.”

The criticism reflects a broader discomfort with tampering with traditional recipes especially when it comes to much-loved ingredients like mangoes.

Expert Take: Is It Healthy or Harmful?

From a nutritional standpoint, both eggs and mangoes are healthy on their own. Eggs provide high-quality protein and essential nutrients, while mangoes are rich in antioxidants and support immune health. However, combining them, especially with heavy toppings like mayonnaise and butter may not align with balanced eating habits.

High-fat condiments and excessive spices can overshadow the health benefits of the core ingredients, potentially leading to digestive discomfort for some.

Conclusion

While food innovation should be celebrated, not all experiments win hearts or taste buds. The mango omelette may not become a mainstream favourite, but it does raise interesting questions about flavour boundaries and food trends.
As always, balance, taste, and health should go hand-in-hand when trying something new in the kitchen.
