The Hidden Danger in Your Protein Powder
Doctors across India are raising alarms about a growing health crisis among young adults who misuse steroids and unregulated protein supplements. Experts at the Delhi Hip 360 Conference recently reported a surge in serious hip conditions, typically seen in older adults, now affecting people in their 20s.
Steroids and Supplements Behind Early Hip Damage
Dr. L Tomar, senior orthopaedic specialist at Max Hospital and chairman of the conference, revealed that many young people visiting his clinic complain of long-lasting hip pain. Upon investigation, a significant number are diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis (AVN)—a condition where blood flow to the hip bone is reduced, leading to the death of bone tissue. According to him, over 70% of these cases are linked to the use of anabolic steroids or excessive intake of unverified protein powders.
Unregulated Products: Major Threat
Recent inspections by the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) uncovered that many protein supplements sold in the market contain banned substances, including performance-enhancing steroids. These products are often available without any proper checks, both online and in local gyms.
How Steroids Harm the Hip Joint
Dr. Rajiv Jain, senior orthopaedic surgeon and conference coordinator, explained that steroids disrupt blood flow to bones, especially the femoral head, the top part of the thigh bone that fits into the hip. This disruption can lead to pain, stiffness, limping, and in severe cases, complete collapse of the hip joint. When this happens, the only solution is often a total hip replacement, a surgery usually reserved for elderly patients.
Fitness Gone Wrong
Dr. Sharad Agarwal, scientific chairman of the conference, pointed out that while the fitness industry is booming in India, it lacks proper regulation and education. Many young people wrongly believe that bigger muscles mean better health, without understanding the damage they may be doing to their bones. He emphasised that strong bones matter just as much as visible muscles.
Conclusion
Quick physical gains can come at a high cost. India’s youth are urged to focus on long-term health over short-term results. Real fitness means maintaining both muscle strength and joint health. Avoid shortcuts, choose a safer, smarter path to fitness.
