New mom kills baby in cauldron after it ‘refused milk’

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly causing the death of her 6-week-old infant. The heartbreaking event occurred on Sunday, July 6, in the early morning hours. Police believe the mother may have been suffering from postpartum depression (PPD), a serious mental health condition affecting some women after childbirth.

Timeline of Events

Radha, the woman in question, had delivered a baby boy just a month and a half ago. She had been staying with her parents post-delivery—a common practice during the recovery period.

According to the police:

  • In the early hours of Sunday, Radha allegedly placed the infant in a large metal vessel used to heat water and left him there.
  • After this, she reportedly returned to sleep, not informing anyone of what had occurred.

How the Case Unfolded

The following morning, on Monday (July 7), Radha’s parents noticed the child was missing. When asked, she initially claimed that someone had entered the home during the night and taken the baby. Alarmed, the parents contacted the police.
During a search of the house, the baby’s body was discovered inside the water cauldron. Radha was questioned by investigators, and during further interrogation, she allegedly confessed to drowning the child.

Suspected Postpartum Mental Health Crisis

Investigators suspect that Radha may have been suffering from postpartum depression, which could have played a significant role in the tragic outcome.

Reports suggest:

  • She was emotionally distressed because her husband had stopped visiting her.
  • She was overwhelmed and exhausted, especially due to the baby’s constant crying.
  • She also faced difficulties breastfeeding, which may have deepened her feelings of helplessness.

These signs align with clinical symptoms of postpartum depression, which can impair a mother’s ability to cope, bond with her baby, or seek help.

Legal Action and Next Steps

Radha has been taken into custody and formally charged under Section 103 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to murder. Authorities have initiated a deeper investigation to understand all contributing factors.

What Is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression (PPD) is more than just “baby blues.” It is a clinical condition that can begin days or even weeks after childbirth. Symptoms may include:

  • Persistent sadness or mood swings
  • Feeling overwhelmed or hopeless
  • Difficulty bonding with the baby
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby

Without timely intervention, the condition can escalate into a psychiatric emergency.

Why Early Intervention Matters

This case highlights a critical gap in mental health awareness and maternal care. Families, communities, and healthcare providers must recognize the signs of distress early. Routine postnatal check-ups should include mental health screening, and mothers must be offered emotional support and professional guidance during this vulnerable time.

Conclusion

While the legal process will determine the outcomes in this case, the tragedy underlines the urgent need to prioritise maternal mental health in India. Postpartum depression is treatable, but only if it is identified early and treated with care, not stigma.
