Was It a Snake Bite or Foul Play? Police Investigate

A 28-year-old woman named Rubina, a resident of Bapudham in Chandigarh, tragically lost her life under mysterious circumstances on the evening of June 15, 2025. What was meant to be a peaceful visit to a nearby Shani Temple and then Sukhna Lake turned into a series of alarming events that are now the focus of an active police and forensic investigation.

Sequence of Events

Rubina was last seen with her friend Suraj, who resides in the Grain Market, Sector 26. According to the police report, the two were walking near the stairs at Sukhna Lake when Rubina suddenly claimed she had been bitten by a snake. She collapsed shortly after.
In response, Suraj placed her in his e-rickshaw and rushed her toward the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH-16). However, on the way, he checked on her and realized she had passed away. Instead of seeking help immediately, a panicked Suraj allegedly drove to a forest area near Dhanas Lake and Village Khuada Lahora and abandoned her body.

Body Discovery and Police Investigation

The following afternoon, at around 1:45 PM, a group of local women stumbled upon Rubina’s body and informed Mohinder, a forest guard. He alerted the police using the emergency helpline 112. Soon after, police officials, including the DSP Central Division, SHO of Sarangpur Police Station, and a forensic team, arrived at the scene. The body was then transferred to GMSH-16 mortuary for an autopsy.

Autopsy Findings

Despite the autopsy being performed, the exact cause of Rubina’s death remains uncertain. While a snake bite is suspected, medical experts have not ruled out other possibilities such as poisoning or strangulation. Authorities are currently awaiting a detailed forensic report to confirm the cause.

Medical Insights: Why Confirming the Cause Matters

Determining the exact cause of death is crucial not only for justice but also for public awareness. Snake bites, for instance, can lead to rapid cardiovascular collapse, but other symptoms like swelling, puncture marks, and neurotoxic signs are typically visible. On the other hand, poisoning and strangulation present entirely different clinical signs, which forensic experts can identify during an autopsy.

Conclusion

This tragic case highlights the importance of timely medical intervention, clear documentation, and ethical decision-making in emergencies. Additionally, disposing of a body without reporting the death can delay crucial forensic analysis and hinder justice.
