Hospital Sealed After Twins Die in Painful Mishap
In a heartbreaking incident from Ibrahimpatnam in Telangana’s Rangareddy district, a five-month pregnant woman lost her unborn twins after hospital staff allegedly followed treatment instructions given by a doctor over the phone instead of attending to her in person.
Routine Check-up Turns Into Tragedy
The 26-year-old woman, Butti Keerthi, had conceived twins through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). On April 6, she visited Vijaya Laxmi Hospital for a routine prenatal check-up. During the examination, senior gynecologist Dr. V Anusha Reddy found that Keerthi’s cervix was weak, a condition that could lead to premature labor.
To prevent this, the doctor performed a procedure called cervical cerclage, where stitches are placed to support the cervix. Keerthi was then sent home to rest.
Sudden Pain and a Critical Decision
On the morning of May 4, Keerthi developed severe abdominal pain and was taken back to the same hospital. At that time, Dr. Anusha Reddy was not available. Instead of referring the case to another on-site doctor or coming herself, she chose to guide the treatment over a phone call.
The doctor reportedly instructed the nurses to give an injection to manage the pain. However, this decision had tragic consequences.
Stitches Ruptured, Twins Could Not Be Saved
According to district health officials, the injection failed to relieve the pain and instead caused Keerthi’s cervical stitches to rupture. As a result, the twins were expelled from the womb and could not be saved. Fortunately, Keerthi survived the ordeal.
“This is a serious case of medical negligence,” said Dr. Venkateshwarlu Rao, the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO). “The doctor should not have allowed nurses to handle such a sensitive case alone.”
Legal Action and Hospital Sealed
The police registered a case under Section 106(1) and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with medical negligence. “We are awaiting the detailed report from the health department to proceed further,” said I Jagadeesh, Station House Officer at Ibrahimpatnam.
Following the incident, the Telangana Health Department sealed the hospital, and a full investigation is underway.
Keerthi’s family and relatives held a protest outside the hospital, demanding strict action against the hospital management and the involved doctor.
