The Quest for Youth: Bryan Johnson’s Bio-Hacking Disaster
Overview
There were some alarming images on Instagram showing the allergic reaction caused because of an anti-aging treatment procedure done on Bryan Johnson, a popular millionaire and bio-hack enthusiast. It is well-known that Mr Johnson has been a proponent of looking young and has spent millions of dollars on anti-aging procedures.
The procedure
This procedure was done by injecting Mr. Johnson’s face to maintain his baby face, which was part of an experiment to look young. But surprisingly, this backfired and thirty minutes after the injections, his face began swelling and he temporarily lost his vision for a while. This painful reaction was mentioned in his social media posts.
The Foundations of Project Blueprint
He wrote, “In starting Project Blueprint, I had one question: are we the first generation who won’t die? To begin, my team and I evaluated all the scientific literature on longevity and aging, stacking ranking the best-performing health therapies with the most compelling evidence. Caloric restriction was among the early selections. My daily calorie consumption dropped from 2,500 to 1,950. As a result, I got lean and lost a lot of fat, especially in my face. My biomarkers were improving, but I looked gaunt. People thought I was on the brink of death.”
The birth of Project Baby Face
With the passage of time and garnering global attention, Mr Johnson realized that he did not have enough facial fat, which was necessary to look young. To tackle this, Project Baby Face was conceptualized, which sought ways to revive the lost volume of facial fat by using one’s body fat.
The initial step of Project Baby Face was to try a therapy that involved the “injection of a fat-derived extracellular matrix” so that the body could produce natural fat. Mr Johnson had less body fat, so was unable to use his body fat for the procedure therefore he needed a donor for the successful completion of the procedure.
A Severe Reaction
Johnson said “Immediately following the injections, my face began to blow up. And then it got worse, and worse, and worse until I couldn’t even see. It was a severe allergic reaction. Seven days later my face was back to normal and we were back in the trenches reformulating plans for our next attempt. Building a product is one thing; being the product is a whole different thing.”
Bryan Johnson is well known for his anti-aging journey and has been sharing his experiments on social media. The good thing is that his allergic reaction was normalized after seven days. We look forward to his next experiment.
