Tapentadol, Pregabalin Abuse: 4 Firms Shut Down

In a major step to fight against the misuse of prescription drugs, the Jammu and Kashmir Drugs Control Department has taken strict action against four pharmaceutical wholesalers. Their licenses were cancelled after they were allegedly found to be illegally purchasing and selling habit-forming medicines like Tapentadol and Pregabalin, without following proper legal procedures.

Why the Crackdown Happened

According to an official spokesperson, the decision came after detailed inspections were carried out at the premises of these companies. The inspections revealed that the firms were involved in the unauthorised procurement and distribution of controlled medicines, especially from neighbouring states. These medications are known for their significant potential for abuse and addiction.
More importantly, the firms failed to maintain mandatory records such as proper sale and purchase documentation a clear violation of pharmaceutical regulations.

Firms Under Action

The firms whose licenses were revoked include:

  • Healthways Pharma, Rajouri
  • Nuegene Pharmaceutical Distributors
  • N T Traders, Baramulla
  • Essence Pharmaceutical Distributors, Srinagar

These companies were found to be secretly buying and selling restricted medications without following the laws set by the State Drugs Controller and Licensing Authority, Lotika Khajuria.

Focus on Tapentadol and Pregabalin

The two main drugs involved in this case Tapentadol and Pregabalin are powerful medications often prescribed for pain and anxiety-related conditions. However, if misused, they can become addictive and harmful, especially when obtained without a proper prescription.

Tapentadol is a strong painkiller, while Pregabalin is used to treat nerve-related pain, anxiety, and epilepsy. Both drugs are considered habit-forming and must be dispensed under strict medical supervision.

Ensuring Public Safety and Accountability

The Drugs Control Department emphasised that this action reflects their strong commitment to protecting public health and preventing pharmaceutical drug abuse, particularly among young and vulnerable populations.

A department spokesperson said, “This action sends a clear message: Any attempt to bypass the law or contribute to drug misuse will be dealt with firmly.”

Public Awareness and Reporting

Citizens are encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious or unethical sale of prescription drugs. The department has a dedicated helpline for this purpose and urges the public to play an active role in curbing drug misuse.
By taking such actions, the J&K Drugs Control Department aims to ensure that medicines meant to heal are not turned into tools of harm through illegal sales and misuse.

Conclusion

This move is a part of a larger effort to ensure that pharmaceutical firms follow strict guidelines when dealing with drugs that have a high risk of abuse. Regulatory enforcement, public cooperation, and responsible practices are essential in keeping communities safe from the dangers of drug misuse.
