Matcha Biryani? Netizens Beg to Make It Stop

Matcha {powdered green tea from Japan} is everywhere these days. From lattes and cakes to smoothie bowls, this bright green ingredient has become a social media favourite. Known for its antioxidants and metabolism-boosting benefits, matcha has long been praised in the wellness world.
However, recent food experiments using matcha in unusual ways are leaving many people confused and a little uncomfortable.

The Viral Dish That Sparked Reactions

Recently, a food creator named Heena Kausar Raad shared a reel on Instagram featuring a dish she calls “matcha biryani.” In the video, she’s seen standing next to a pot of rice vivid green in colour from the matcha powder.

This isn’t your usual green mint biryani. It’s rice infused with matcha, creating a dish that has sparked a mix of shock, curiosity, and even anger online.

Social Media Is Not Having It

The internet reacted quickly and loudly. For many food lovers, biryani is not just a dish; it’s an emotion. Fusing it with matcha? That felt like a step too far.

Here are some of the top reactions:

  • “Please don’t do this with biryani.”
  • “Chal kya raha hai duniya mein?”
  • “Somewhere, a Hyderabadi just fainted.”
  • “Enough internet for the day.”
  • “Who is eating this?”

The tone was clear: foodies are not on board with this trend.

Why Matcha May Not Belong in Biryani

While matcha does have proven health benefits including boosting brain function, supporting metabolism, and providing antioxidants it has a strong, earthy flavour that doesn’t blend well with spicy Indian rice dishes like biryani.
Traditional biryani recipes rely on carefully balanced spices like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and saffron. Introducing matcha into this mix can completely alter the taste and aroma in ways that don’t complement the original dish.

Fusion or Food Crime?

Food fusion is exciting, and creativity in the kitchen is always encouraged. But experts often caution that cultural dishes carry heritage, emotion, and regional identity. Changing them too drastically especially for the sake of trends can feel like a cultural mismatch rather than innovation.

Conclusion

Matcha in smoothies? Great. Matcha in dessert? Sure. But matcha biryani? That’s a hard pass for most people.
Traditional biryani lovers would prefer their favourite dish to stay the way it’s always been rich, flavorful, and matcha-free.

Before jumping on the next viral food trend, it’s worth asking: Is this creative cooking, or just shock-value content?
