Fake Heart Doctor Did 50 Surgeries in Faridabad Hospital
A shocking case of medical fraud has emerged from Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where a doctor without any formal training in cardiology performed more than 50 heart procedures in just seven months.
The doctor, identified as Pankaj Mohan Sharma, is an MBBS graduate but falsely claimed to be a specialist in cardiology. He was working at the hospital’s heart care centre run by Mediterina Hospital under a public-private partnership.
Stolen Identity and Fake Degrees
Dr Sharma had assumed the identity of a real cardiologist, Dr Pankaj Mohan, and used a fake registration number issued by the National Medical Commission. He claimed to hold MD and DNB degrees in cardiology both of which were completely fabricated.
The fraud came to light when lawyer and activist Sanjay Gupta filed a complaint at the NIT Faridabad police station on April 11. Sources alleged that Sharma had submitted forged documents to land the job.
Original Cardiologist Raises the Alarm
The real Dr Pankaj Mohan became aware of the identity theft and filed a complaint with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in January. He also sent a legal notice to the impostor for misusing his professional credentials.
The deception began to unravel when Dr Sharma was asked to show his degrees in February and instead of providing proof, he stopped showing up for work. Patients who had previously seen him began approaching the real Dr Mohan, who clarified that he had no connection with the heart care centre.
Hospital Admits Suspicion, Removes Doctor
Dr M Pratap Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Mediterina Hospital and head of the heartcare centre, confirmed that Dr Sharma had been removed. “He applied as a general physician through our HR channels. We were always doubtful about his DM in cardiology and eventually acted on it,” Dr Kumar said.
Police Investigation Underway
Dr M Pratap Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Mediterina Hospital and head of the heartcare centre, confirmed that Dr Sharma had been removed. “He applied as a general physician through our HR channels. We were always doubtful about his DM in cardiology and eventually acted on it,” Dr Kumar said.
Yashpal, a spokesperson for the police, said that they are seeking more details from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). “We are trying to understand how he was appointed and allowed to treat patients in the civil hospital for months. Legal action will be taken once we receive all the records,” he stated.
Adding to the mystery, Dr Sharma also ran a Facebook account under the alias ‘Kshitiz Mohan’, where he was listed as the director of a film production company raising further doubts about his professional background.
Conclusion
This incident is a serious reminder of how lapses in medical verification can lead to life-threatening consequences. Patients place their trust in healthcare systems, and ensuring that only qualified specialists perform critical procedures like heart surgeries is not just necessary—it’s non-negotiable.
This case is under active investigation. Authorities have promised strict legal action against those involved, including those responsible for the hiring process.
