Herbal Medicines Are Not Always Good Alternative: Here's Why

A 40-year-old woman from Warangal, Telangana, is in critical condition after discontinuing her prescribed epilepsy medication in favour of a herbal remedy. The victim, M. Yadalakshmi, was managing her condition with allopathic treatment but stopped her medication after being approached by a woman who claimed her herbal preparation could eliminate the need for lifelong treatment.

Unverified Remedy Leads to Emergency

Yadalakshmi purchased the herbal preparation for ₹3,000 and followed the instructions provided. However, on December 19, she was found unconscious at home by her family and rushed to MGM Hospital in Warangal. Doctors discovered her epilepsy had worsened significantly.

Severe Health Complications

According to medical specialists, the herbal remedy not only exacerbated her epilepsy but also caused severe kidney and liver damage. Despite intensive care and dialysis, her condition continues to deteriorate. Dr. Naresh Kumar from the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) stated, “She remains extremely critical.”

Investigation Underway

A joint team from the TGMC and Warangal Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association has begun investigating the matter. They inspected the hospital and collected samples of the herbal preparation for laboratory analysis to determine its contents and potential toxicity.

The Dangers of Unverified Treatments

This incident highlights the risks of switching to unverified remedies without consulting qualified healthcare professionals. Experts warn against discontinuing prescribed treatments, as doing so can worsen underlying conditions and lead to life-threatening complications.
Transitioning from established medical treatments to alternative remedies should always involve professional medical advice. This tragic case underscores the importance of verifying the safety and efficacy of any alternative treatments before use.
