Murmura Chivda: A Classic Puffed Rice Snack

Puffed rice is known as Murmura in Maharashtra. Did you know there is another puffed rice snack that is renowned in Pune and Sangli districts in Maharashtra? It is the Murmura Chivda, which is also known as Khamang Murmura Chivda or Khamang Murmura Namkeen!

Ingredients

  • Puffed rice
  • Roasted peanuts
  • Roasted Split chickpeas (daliya)
  • Green chilly
  • Oil
  • Mustard seeds
  • Cumin seeds
  • Asafoetida (Hing)
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt
  • Red chilly powder
  • Sugar

Method

  • Dry roast the puffed rice for 3-5 minutes and keep aside
  • In a pan, heat oil and add peanuts till they turn crunchy
  • Drain the oil and keep it aside
  • Add the split chickpeas and sauté till they turn golden in colour
  • Drain the oil and keep it aside
  • Turn the gas stove on medium flame, add some more oil to the pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and green chilly and sauté till the curry leaves and green chilly get crisp
  • Turn the heat to low heat, add turmeric stirring continuously and ensure it doesn’t burn
  • Add roasted murmura, peanuts, split chickpeas, salt and some sugar and keep stirring
  •  Mix well till the ingredients become yellow
  • Turn off the stove and keep stirring so that it does not burn

This is a gluten-free and tasty snack and we can amp up the healthiness by adding dry coconut (stir-fried slivers of coconut) or roasted makhana.
