Masala Mandakki: A Crunchy, Spicy Treat from South India

 In our series of puffed rice, today we talk about Churumuri (masala Mandakki), a popular street food from ‘namma Karnataka” in South India. It is also known as Masala Mandakki and is a vegan, gluten-free snack. 

Ingredients

  • Puffed rice
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1-2 tbsp of finely chopped raw mango
  • Chilli powder
  • Turmeric powder
  • Cumin powder
  • Black salt
  • Regular salt
  • Coriander leaves
  • Roasted peanuts, masala peanuts or Congress Kadlekai
  • Coconut oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Grated carrot

Recipe

  • Heat ½ tablespoon coconut oil in a pan.
  • Add 2 cups of puffed rice and keep stirring for 2-3 minutes on medium flame.
  • Take off the pan from the gas stove and after 2-3 minutes, add 1 teaspoon Kashmiri chilli powder, 2-3 pinches of turmeric powder, ½ tablespoon coconut oil, ¼ cup roasted peanuts, masala peanuts, or Congress Kadlekai (Bangalore style spicy roasted peanuts), ½ teaspoon cumin powder (jeera powder), 2 to3 pinches of black salt, ¼ or 1/3 teaspoon regular salt.
  • Mix all the ingredients well.
  • Then add the finely chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, grated carrot, and raw mango.
  • Garnish with some coriander leaves.
  • Add ½ to 1 teaspoon lemon juice and serve.

You can add a diced boiled potato if you want. Such a simple recipe and all these ingredients are easily available in our homes. With minimal effort and everyday ingredients, you get a wholesome and flavorful dish ready to enjoy!
