CM Apology Fails to Calm Angry Goa Doctors

In a recent incident that has captured national attention, Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane found himself at the center of controversy after publicly scolding a senior doctor during a surprise visit to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The episode has not only drawn strong reactions from the medical community but also reignited broader discussions about respect, professionalism, and the role of politics in healthcare settings.

What Happened at GMCH?

Over the weekend, Minister Rane paid an unannounced visit to the casualty ward at GMCH. During the inspection, he confronted Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar, the hospital’s chief medical officer, and demanded his suspension all in front of hospital staff and news cameras.

This public reprimand quickly went viral on social media, leading to strong backlash from doctors and opposition political parties. Many viewed the minister’s actions as disrespectful and demoralizing to healthcare professionals.

Minister Issues Public Apology

Following the criticism, Rane took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to apologize. In his post, he admitted that he let his emotions get the better of him. He wrote,In the heat of the moment, my emotions overtook my expression… It was never my intention to undermine or disrespect any medical professional.”

However, despite this statement, many doctors felt the apology lacked sincerity and failed to address the deeper issues raised by his behaviour.

Doctors Demand Respect and Accountability

In response, hundreds of medical staff at GMCH began a protest on Monday. This group comprised senior consultants, department heads, interns, and members of the Goa Association of Resident Doctors. Their main demand: a more genuine and respectful apology from the minister.

The protesters also called for changes in hospital protocol. They argued that politicians and media should not be allowed into sensitive medical areas like casualty wards, where patient care should be the top priority. Both GARD and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) strongly condemned the minister’s actions, and GARD warned it might go on strike if no further steps were taken.

Minister Tries to Contain the Fallout

In an attempt to ease tensions, Rane later clarified that no formal suspension order was issued against Dr. Kuttikar. He also posted a follow-up message online, praising the hard work and dedication of doctors, saying, “Doctors hold a sacred and noble position in our society.”
Furthermore, he urged all medical staff to return to their duties and cautioned against turning the incident into a political issue.

Chief Minister Intervenes to Calm Situation

Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stepped in on Sunday to help settle the dispute. He confirmed that Dr. Kuttikar would not face suspension and said he had spoken with the health minister to ensure the matter did not escalate further. Sawant emphasized the need for calm and professionalism so that the hospital could return to normal operations.

Politics vs Healthcare Independence

This event has once again opened up a serious debate across the country. Many are questioning how much control politicians should have over medical institutions. While Minister Rane said he was only trying to ensure better patient care, critics argue that his actions weakened trust in the healthcare system and damaged staff morale.
The incident highlights a growing concern that political interference in hospitals can harm both patients and professionals. Experts and healthcare leaders are now calling for clear boundaries, better communication, and mutual respect between government officials and medical workers.

Conclusion

As the protests continue and public confidence wavers, this controversy serves as a reminder that respect, professionalism, and collaboration are essential in healthcare. While the minister has tried to make amends, the demand from the medical community is clear: accountability, reform, and a renewed commitment to upholding the dignity of doctors and patients alike.
For the future, leaders and healthcare professionals must work together not in confrontation, but in cooperation to build a public health system that values both care and respect.
