Mass Murder Shocks Kerala: What Led to the Killings?
A shocking crime has unfolded in Venjaramoodu, Kerala, where a 23-year-old man allegedly murdered five of his family members in three different locations before surrendering to the police. The gruesome killings have left the community in shock, with investigators revealing disturbing details about the case.
The Victims and Crime Scenes
The accused, identified as Afan, is said to have brutally killed his teenage brother, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and girlfriend. He also attacked his mother, who miraculously survived but remains in critical condition at a medical college hospital.
When police arrived at the three crime scenes, they were met with horrific sights. The murders were committed with extreme violence, mainly using a hammer as a weapon.
Details of the Killings
- One of the most disturbing scenes was that of Farsana, a postgraduate student in Kollam and reportedly Afan’s girlfriend. Her body was found seated on a chair, with a severe head injury caused by a hammer. Investigators believe she was struck so forcefully that she died instantly, not even having the chance to fall from her seat. Several more blows to her head disfigured her face. A photograph of the accused was placed on the table beside her, stained with blood.
- Afan’s younger brother, 13-year-old Afsan, was also among the victims. The accused allegedly lured him home under the pretence of bringing him Kuzhimanthi, a popular Arabian meat-rice dish. Once home, he attacked Afsan multiple times on the head, killing him instantly. Shockingly, police found several ₹500 notes scattered around his body, adding a disturbing element to the crime.
- His uncle, Latheef, suffered one of the most brutal attacks. Police reports indicate that he was struck over 20 times on the head with a hammer, leaving his skull shattered. His body was found seated in a chair, drenched in blood. His wife, Sajitha, was also attacked in the kitchen while preparing tea. She was struck multiple times and found lying near the kitchen area.
- The accused’s 88-year-old grandmother, Salma Beevi, was believed to be his first victim. He allegedly used a hammer to kill her at her home in Pangode, before moving on to attack the others.
Chilling Aftermath and Police Investigation
Afan showed no signs of distress after the murders. Locals who saw him between the killings said he appeared calm and composed. Before heading to the police station, he allegedly left an LPG valve open in his house, seemingly intending to cause an explosion if anyone entered at night.
After committing the murders, he walked into the police station and confessed to assaulting six people, stating that they would all be dead by now. His demeanour remained indifferent even while giving his statement to the police.
Investigators have gathered evidence suggesting that Afan was a drug abuser. However, authorities are still working to determine which substance he was using and whether he was under its influence at the time of the murders.
Final Thoughts
The Venjaramoodu mass murder case is one of the most horrifying crimes Kerala has witnessed in recent years. The brutality of the killings, the accused’s unsettling composure, and the deeply personal nature of the victims have left both the authorities and the public in shock. As the investigation continues, more details may emerge about Afan’s motives and mental state, shedding light on the tragic events that led to this gruesome massacre.
