ATM Fraud Turns Deadly! Elderly Man Collapses & Dies
An elderly man lost his life after being deceived by two youths while withdrawing money from an ATM in the Barsar subdivision. The victim, Ashok Kumar from Samoh village, was heading to the police station to file a complaint when he suddenly collapsed. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared dead at the hospital, officials reported on Wednesday.
How the Fraud Occurred
On Monday, Kumar visited the Punjab National Bank (PNB) ATM in Mahere to withdraw cash. After multiple failed attempts, he sought assistance from two young men standing nearby. Instead of helping him, they allegedly swapped his ATM card and later withdrew Rs 50,000 from his account.
When Kumar received a transaction alert on his mobile phone, he immediately went to the bank to report the unauthorized withdrawal. Bank officials confirmed the fraudulent activity, prompting him to take further action by filing a police complaint.
While Kumar was en route to the police station, he suddenly collapsed. Bystanders quickly rushed him to Barsar Hospital, but despite their efforts, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Police Investigation Underway
Following a complaint from Kumar’s family, authorities launched an investigation. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Barsar, Lalman Sharma, stated that a case has been registered, and CCTV footage from the bank is being examined to identify the culprits.
Sharma also urged citizens to remain cautious while using ATMs and never share their card or PIN with strangers.
Stress and Mental Impact of Financial Fraud
This unfortunate incident highlights the severe mental and emotional distress that victims of financial fraud often experience. The sudden shock and anxiety caused by realizing one has been deceived can have serious health consequences, particularly for elderly individuals. Stress, combined with underlying health conditions, may trigger fatal medical emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes.
Conclusion
Authorities emphasize the importance of spreading awareness about ATM fraud prevention and providing support for victims dealing with such traumatic experiences. Families and communities should remain vigilant and ensure that elderly individuals receive proper guidance when using banking services.
