Antidepressants & Heart Failure: New Study Reveals Risk
A recent study suggests that prolonged use of antidepressants may be linked to a higher risk of sudden cardiac death. The research, conducted in Denmark, indicates that the risk increases depending on the duration of antidepressant use and varies across different age groups.
Study Findings
The study analyzed data from 4.3 million residents in Denmark. The findings revealed that people who used antidepressants for extended periods had a significantly higher risk of sudden cardiac death:
- 1 to 5 years of antidepressant use – 56% higher risk of sudden cardiac death.
- 6 or more years of use – 2.2 times higher risk.
Age-Based Risk Variations
Ages 30-39:
- 1 to 5 years of use – 3 times higher risk compared to those not using antidepressants.
- 6 or more years of use – 5 times higher risk.
Ages 50-59:
- 1 to 5 years of use – 2 times higher risk.
- 6 or more years of use – 4 times higher risk.
Possible Reasons for Increased Risk
Dr. Jasmin Mujkanovic from Rigshospitalet Hjertecentret, Copenhagen, explained that the longer a person takes antidepressants, the higher their risk of sudden cardiac death. Several factors could contribute to this link, including:
- Adverse effects of antidepressants: Some medications may have negative effects on heart function over time.
- Pre-existing heart conditions: Younger individuals may have underlying heart muscle thickening or electrical abnormalities, while older people may suffer from narrowing of heart arteries.
- Lifestyle and behavioral factors: Depression-related habits such as poor cardiovascular health and delayed medical check-ups may also play a role.
Conclusion
The study, presented at the EHRA 2025 congress of the European Society of Cardiology, highlights the need for further investigation. Researchers suggest that future studies should explore whether antidepressants directly impact heart health or if other factors contribute to the increased risk. Patients on long-term antidepressant treatment should consult healthcare professionals to assess their individual risks and discuss possible preventive measures.
While antidepressants are essential for managing mental health conditions, their long-term use may be associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. People using these medications should be aware of potential risks and maintain regular medical check-ups to ensure overall heart health.
