Chennai Oncologist Brutally Stabbed—Is Healthcare Security Failing?
A doctor from the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Guindy, Chennai, is currently in intensive care after suffering multiple stab wounds from a patient’s son, reportedly angered by alleged negligence in his mother’s treatment. The doctor, who has injuries to his neck, back, forehead, and head, is receiving medical care from a multidisciplinary team at the hospital.
Incident Overview
The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday when the accused, identified as 26-year-old Vignesh, sought a discussion with Dr. Balaji Jaganathan, an oncologist at the government hospital. Vignesh allegedly entered the outpatient room and assaulted Dr. Balaji, stabbing him at least seven times with a small knife.
Security and hospital staff quickly intervened, rescuing the injured doctor, who had previously undergone a pacemaker implant. He was stabilized after prompt treatment by the emergency medical team. According to a hospital anesthesiologist, Dr. Balaji’s underlying heart condition contributed to excessive bleeding.
Background and Allegations
Vignesh’s mother, Kanchana, had received six chemotherapy sessions at Kalaignar Centenary Hospital before the family decided to seek treatment at a private facility. Allegedly, the private doctors informed them that her lungs were compromised, leading Vignesh to believe her initial treatment had been inadequate. Health Minister M. Subramanian clarified that Kanchana’s cancer was in an advanced stage, and emphasized that the perceived lack of proper treatment was likely a misunderstanding. Police are continuing their investigation.
Security Concerns and Protests by Doctors
Following the incident, doctors at the hospital organized a protest to demand better security measures. Dr. K Senthil, President of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA), announced an indefinite strike, limiting services to emergency cases and critical surgeries. “We’ve repeatedly raised security concerns with the government over the years, but no action has been taken to ensure safety in government hospitals,” Senthil stated.
The accused had acquired an outpatient slip before meeting with Dr. Balaji, suggesting he had no visible signs of aggression, according to Minister Subramanian. Being a familiar face at the hospital, he entered the premises without raising suspicion.
Government Response and Investigation
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed dismay over the incident and promised enhanced safety for government healthcare workers.”The culprit was quickly detained,” Stalin said on X . “Dr. Balaji is receiving all necessary care, and a thorough investigation is underway. Our government doctors perform invaluable service, and we must ensure their security.”
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, along with Health Minister Subramanian, visited the hospital to check on Dr. Balaji’s condition and reassured staff of strict legal action against the attacker. AIADMK leaders also visited the injured doctor and criticized the incident as a reflection of law enforcement’s current state.
Continuing Strike and Public Response
In response to the attack, TNGDA declared an indefinite strike, urging the government to address security issues in state hospitals. Essential services will remain available, while other services are suspended until further notice.
As the investigation continues, Dr. Balaji’s condition is reported to be stable, and additional security measures are expected to be introduced at government healthcare facilities.
